Etsy Bans Fur After Protest Campaign by Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT)
New York, NY (April 2, 2026) — Etsy, Inc. has announced a ban on the sale of all animal fur effective August 2026. Etsy announced its new policy in an email to the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT), and updated its Animal Products Policy to reflect it. This follows an intensive 58 day campaign against Etsy led by CAFT, which included over 50 protests of Etsy and its affiliates across 17 cities. As of April 2, 2026, Etsy has thousands of listings featuring fox, mink, rabbit, coyote, and other fur products which will all be removed by August 2026, per its new policy.
Etsy’s updated policy states: “Etsy prohibits products made from or containing natural fur from animals killed primarily for their pelts, regardless of age or origin. This includes products like raw pelts, finished garments, and accessories made with real fur from animals such as mink, fox, and rabbit.” Fur sellers on Etsy have already been notified that their listings will be removed under the policy; in an email they wrote “We’re writing to let you know about an upcoming change to Etsy’s marketplace policies that may affect your shop.”
Notably the campaign included a high-profile disruption of Etsy’s live presentation at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco on March 3, 2026, where activists confronted CEO Kruti Patel Goyal and CFO Lanny Baker on stage in front of investors and analysts.
In response Suzie Stork, Executive Director of CAFT, stated “Etsy’s policy sets a new standard for online retailers. Fur is losing. Designers are dropping it, publications are not promoting it, and now, Etsy, one of the world’s largest e-commerce marketplaces, is banning it. The industry has nowhere left to hide.” She continued “CAFT’s attention is now fully directed at Milan Fashion Week and LVMH. All designers and affiliates who work with Milan Fashion Week should be paying close attention.” Milan Fashion Week has also been an ongoing target of anti-fur protests as part of a CAFT campaign.
Fur production has been extensively documented to cause severe suffering to millions of animals, significant environmental damage, and heightened public health risks.
