FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, NY– December 3– On the heels of a successful protest campaign against the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to adopt a fur-free policy for New York Fashion Week, Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT), has announced its next target is Hearst Communications. CAFT, known for hard-hitting protests sometimes taking place outside the homes of executives, is asking for a fur-free policy for all publications under Hearst. Notably, Hearst-owned Elle already operates under a fur-free policy.
This announcement also comes less than two months after CAFT successfully pressured Vogue Magazine’s parent company Condé Nast to ban new fur from all of its publications.
In response to the New York Fashion Week campaign, Kim Salvo, board member of the American Fur Council, accused the CFDA of succumbing to the pressure of animal activists, “who violate the ability of companies to do business by threatening and harassing them through protests and other vile tactics.”
CAFT Executive Director Suzie Stork said the group is prepared for another high-energy grassroots effort:
“Hearst is one of the most influential publishers in fashion. With Elle already fur-free, it’s time forHarper’s BAZAAR, Town & Country, and the rest of the Hearst portfolio to follow suit. No modern publication should be promoting an industry built on systemic cruelty.”
This new initiative continues CAFT’s long history of bold, decentralized pressure campaigns challenging some of the world’s most influential fashion houses, including Marc Jacobs and Max Mara.
