Marc Jacobs declares defeat: fur dropped after
aggressive campaign from “bullies”
New York, NY – One year campaign climaxes in week of broken windows, arrests, and a major designer dropping fur.
Fur is out, designer Marc Jacobs announced today following a siege of protests that included visits to executives homes, damage to company headquarters, collaborators stores, and more.
The campaign was led by Coalition To Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT), who said:
“CAFT has a 100% success rate. Marc Jacobs learned the hard way that we never rest, we never go away, and we always win.”
In his concession statement today, Marc Jacobs blamed the targeting of his employees as the final straw.
“It pains me to give in to bullies. I had given into bullies much of my young life. Unfortunately, in my current situation with a radical organization (who will remain nameless) claiming to care about the lives of animals while endangering the well-being of innocent individuals and communities leaves me no choice but to give in to a bully.“
CAFT responded:
“Call us bullies. Your tantrum is the last whimper of a dying industry.”
To date, CAFT has influenced 47 companies to drop fur. Marc Jacobs was the first target to resist declaring a fur-free policy so defiantly that activists escalated to targeting homes of employees.
“Marc Jacobs took the right move a year too late, exposing their employees to protests at their homes, exposing the spouses of their executives to felony arrests, and exposing their collaborators to public ridicule.”
The concession from Marc Jacobs comes after a week long escalation with over twenty protests, six arrests, broken windows at Marc Jacobs headquarters, over a dozen Jacob’s targets decorated in blood red paint, and minutes after an activist was assaulted outside the store of a Jacob’s collaborator.
“This was an expensive lesson for Marc Jacobs that can be avoided by our future targets: if you use fur, we will be outside your stores, outside your offices, and outside your homes until you announce a fur free policy. Let Marc Jacobs’ embarrassing defeat be your guide.”
