FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, NY– December 3–The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has announced that it will no longer allow animal fur to be displayed on New York Fashion Week (NYFW) runways starting in September 2026. This decision was made three weeks after the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT USA) announced NYFW as the new top target of their protest campaign against the fur industry.
This announcement also comes less than two months after CAFT successfully pressured Vogue Magazine’s parent company Condé Nast to ban new fur from all of its publications. In the days leading up to CFDA’s announcement, CAFT supporters held four protests at the CFDA’s Manhattan headquarters, including an action where activists entered the office with megaphones, staging a demonstration inside the building. Activists also decorated the office’s holiday tree with ornaments reading “CFDA Drop Fur” and “There’s Nothing Merry About Tortured Foxes.”
Steven Kolb, CEO and president of the CFDA, said in a statement:“There is already little to no fur shown at NYFW, but by taking this position, the CFDA hopes to inspire American designers to think more deeply about the fashion industry’s impact on animals.”

CAFT responded: “New York Fashion Week banning fur sends a clear message to designers around the world: fur is out. With both NYFW and Vogue no longer willing to promote fur, it’s only a matter of time before forward-thinking designers drop fur for more ethical alternatives,” said Suzie Stork, Executive Director of CAFT USA. She continues, “ The fur industry is both cruel and unsustainable, with animals living their entire lives in filthy wire cages, only to then be killed by electrocution, gas chambers, neck breaking, or in some cases even live-skinning. The environmental impacts are similarly concerning, with fur producing 21 times the carbon emissions per pound as cotton. We commend the CFDA and NYFW for their ethical and forward-thinking decision. We look forward to others following suit.”
This victory builds on CAFT’s history of organizing bold grassroots pressure campaigns against some of the world’s most powerful fashion corporations, including Marc Jacobs and Max Mara.
